The interesting thing about Elementary is that — aside from establishing that this Holmes keeps bees (a relatively obscure reference to the books) — it does not rely on iconography to mark it out as an adaptation of Sherlock Holmes: rather than feeling slavishly devoted to the minutiae of the books it looks at the characters and their relationship holistically, placing their traits rather than their tics at the centre of who they are as people. As a result — and I say this as someone who has watched a lot of Sherlock Holmes adaptations – Elementary honestly feels like one of the freshest and most exciting adaptations of the mythology and yet one of the closest to the spirit rather than the trappings of the story.
